To your surprise, the anesthesiologist will work with you to get your epidural anesthesia procedure done. The anesthesiologist  injects  sufficient numbing medicine with a tiny thin needle before inserting the epidural needle. The initial injection of numbing medicine should not be more painful than your labor pains. Once the numbing has been done, you should only feel pressure while the epidural space is being located.
